THE CHALLENGE

The demand for new teachers is growing as education changes rapidly and the number of school-age children increases. Education reform is taking place across the country. New federal and state initiatives are encouraging all schools, teachers and students to strive to be the best in the world. These changes are creating new challenges as well as new opportunities for prospective teachers.
Veteran teachers will tell you that teaching is difficult, wonderful, exhausting, fun, stressful, enlightening-and rewarding beyond compare. Teaching requires enormous patience. There is no ready-made formula for good teaching. Studies on effective teaching demonstrate, on the contrary, there are nearly as many successful styles as there are successful teachers. But there are some qualities in good teachers on which nearly everyone agrees. Candidates for teaching should be among the highest academic performers. Good teachers are fair to their students; they are interested in ideas; they believe that teaching and learning are important. They have a strong commitment to democracy and social progress. Good teachers want to make a difference.
If you are interested in this exciting, everchanging field, you need to be aware that decisions about hiring teachers are made by local school districts, and requirements for entering the teaching profession are set by each state individually This means that you will need to consult a variety of resources to get the specific information you want. Preparing to Become a TeacherBecoming a teacher requires at least a bachelor's degree, usually related to the field in which you plan to teach, and in most states some form of advanced training is needed. Today's classrooms present teachers with more challenges and therefore demand a deeper understanding of successful classroom practices. Dedication and a desire to help children are important, but teachers also need a strong academic background and solid professional preparation.
